You can hear maritime fog transposed to the bright lights of the big city in the Toronto, Canada based Mawzy’s discography. Matt Cooke’s psych-pop project drives forward with a disco edge, bright guitars, and vocals reverbed into the sky. This nostalgic sound is reminiscent of 80s psychedelia and modern jangle-pop groups like Alvvays and Real Estate. After growing up in Newfoundland and playing with many East Coast bands, Matt Cooke moved to Toronto where he founded Mawzy in 2018, with his EP Escapism. Supported by FACTOR Canada, Mawzy's eagerly awaited debut album, Long View, dropped in April 2024 to enthusiastic fan reception. The LP is a compounding of all the intricate stylings that have made up Mawzy’s history thus far. Lush, computerized buzzing, rich swinging drums, analog synthesizers that echo into oblivion, all shuddering in the mist with Cooke himself who fades into view in bursts of light amidst the gloom. Long View has since been profiled on international blogs, received national radio play, and has been featured on Spotify and Amazon Music editorial playlists. Supporting this debut release, Mawzy reaches abroad completing a cross-Canada and European tours in 2024, gearing up for more fresh music releases in 2025.
