Toronto-based singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist Michael Sawers—better known on stage as The M.A.S. Project—has been shaping his sound for nearly two decades. Now 26, he’s logged 20 years on piano, 10 years as a vocalist, and added both electric and acoustic guitar to fuel his high-energy pop performances. Music became Michael’s compass in high school, when he joined his older brothers’ blues rock band. While the group disbanded as everyone chose university over touring, Michael launched The M.A.S. Project, named for his initials, to keep writing, singing, and performing throughout school. From despair-laced rock tracks and piano ballads to country-tinged love songs, Michael captures his unique experiences as an artist. His lyrics move from self-aware confession to cinematic storytelling, often nodding to pop culture, while his melodies draw on the eclectic nature of his favourite artists like Roman Clarke.
