Astoria came about when the Argentinean-Canadian musician Jonathan Gejtman, raised in Buenos Aires, found himself navigating the snowy streets of Toronto. In an era marked by artificially composed music, blockchained-backed royalty systems and remote recording sessions, the multi-awarded composer and producer asked himself; what does Tango sound like, here, today? The project seeks to reconstruct the “DNA” of Tango—both the traditional Guardia Vieja and the revolutionary Nuevo Tango—through the lens of advanced synthesis, rock, and the hyperbole of the modern playlist. Think of it as Pink Floyd and Vangelis jamming to Astor Piazzolla’s compositions at 6pm on a beach in Ibiza. It’s fun and approachable for the ones unfamiliar with tango, yet remarkably ingenious for the listener that knows the repertoire.
